Because Twitter is relatively new in the world of social networking, many have yet to utilize it in their business or site promotion endeavors. But as Twitter grows, as it does day on day, it becomes an even more important and powerful tool to increasing your site visitors and customers.
Here are some straightforward tips on how to make the best use of Tw,itter. These tips will undoubtedly assist in raising your Twitter profile, increasing your number of followers, and driving more traffic to your site.
Firstly – The Basics
Twitter is a social networking tool where users post messages totaling 140 characters. Messages, or Tweets as they have become known, can contain anything – personal updates, product news, links. Popular tweets come from celebrities who inform fans of their daily routine, promote their latest films, and post pictures of what they’re up to.
On Twitter your followers see your tweets and you see the tweets of those you follow.
However, while your followers are the most likeliest to read your tweets, your messages are globally available for everyone to see. Those who don’t follow you can find your tweets if their Twitter or Google searches uncover them, or if your followers re-tweet (re post) your messages to their own followers.Get a Following: How Twitter can help you drive traffic to your site – The best way to drive traffic from Twitter to your site is through direct links in tweets. The more people see, follow, and retweet these links, the more authentic traffic is driven to your site. For the most exposure, your need a big, strong and loyal set of followers. But how do you get 100, 500, 1000, 10,000 followers?
Good question. There’s no single answer. The fact is, unless you are a celebrity or already have instant and far-reaching appeal in the marketplace, you’re not going to get 10,000 followers overnight.
But there are ways to organically grow your audience to achieve your goal. If you remain relevant, communicative, personal, and view Twitter as a community that benefits from a supportive network, your followers will grow.
Have the personal touch – Post relevant tweets that provide people with information relating to your website/product. Be helpful and answer questions. Here you can post links to articles on your website that provide more information on the topic, or drive traffic directly to articles you feel your visitors will want to read.
Questions from Twitter users can be answered publicly (which is advised, as it shows your willingness to form relationships and be part of the community) by using “@” followed by the Twitter user’s username. Questions can be answered privately through Direct Messages which is similar to instant messaging.
Maintain the human touch. Less than half your tweets should have links to your site or in some way promote your product. Answers questions, use your tweets to show your human side (what’s happening in your day, what was the last film your watched/band you saw/restaurant you visited), take part in trending topics, retweet and draw attention to other people’s tweets and websites (especially if they are in the same market as you).
Great communication, a friendly approach, and remaining relevant will immediately see your followers grow.
Follow others and be followed back – Simple: follow other Twitter users who share similar interests. Often these Twitter users will follow you back. Build your links with others by joining in on conversations relevant to your site or product. With a film site like mine for example, I was able to find other film enthusiasts by their Twitter names or user descriptions. This is another good ploy to find people to follow and be followed back in return.
Keep it simple – With Twitter, you have to be clear in point. After all, you only have 140 characters to use. One of the best ways to clarify your point or topic is to use Twitter’s hashtag system (“#”).
Because Twitter’s news feed is constantly being updated, your tweet can quickly get lost. The use of a hashtag is in effect a way of categorising your tweet, making it easier for people to uncover in searches, while its content has an immediacy. For example, if you’re selling cat food you could begin your tweet “#catfood” which immediately identifies it.
Keep hashtags simple and clear. If you’re discussing the difficulty of breeding dogs don’t use “#howhardisittobreeddogs”, use something that is more to the point and clear such as “#dogbreeding”.
Don’t overuse hashtags (only some of your tweets need them) but do make use of them when you think the topic has a broad and relevant message.
NB. You’ll notice on the right side of Twitter that some topics are trending. Trending topics are those that most people are talking about in their tweets. Often, hashtag topics find their way on to the trending list.
What can I do from my own site?
Draw attention to your Twitter account from your site – Use a Twitter badge link on your website to draw your reader’s attention to your Twitter account (like the one pictured to the right. Clicking this badge will take you to Top10Films.co.uk’s Twitter page). This will increase your followers and build a loyal following based on common interests. Likewise, utilise the various Twitter widgets to keep your readers up to date with your Twitter activities, and use Retweet buttons to allow for easy tweeting of your most popular posts (like the one you’ll see at the top right of this page, underneath the title).
Using Twitter is fun and easy to do. With its great marketing and networking possibilities it is something you should be using if you want to build your online presence and drive more traffic to your website. You can Follow me On Twitter Honeya8
